News Article: New Immigration Laws in the U.S.

South Carolina is one of several states that has recently passed very restrictive immigration laws.  They are being challenged in court.

  1. This article was eye opening for me. I knew that illegal immigration is a growing problem in the United States, but I had no idea that individual states were beginning to take matters into their own hands and making these serious law changes. I do agree that something needs to be done about illegal immigration, but it doesn't need to be done unconstitutionally by each state. This is just going to cause illegal immigration to be higher in some states than others. Either the federal government needs to step in and create new immigration laws, or create new ways for citizenship to be attained. I don't agree that this problem should be taken care of by individual states on a local level.

  2. I remember reading elsewhere about immigration laws, especially Arizona, but I was unaware that these laws were considered unconstitutional. The federal government is going to have to step in and enforce the laws that they already have in place, or, like Shelby said, create some new ways for citizenship to be achieved. There's no denying that illegal immigration is a large problem, especially in our state, but that doesn't give South Carolina the right to take matters into its own hands.
